The details

Whiskey Tasting in the Jeggy Nettle: Irish Styles of the 1970s

A guided whiskey tasting to close out the week — and a journey back to the decade Irish whiskey very nearly disappeared.

By the 1970s, an industry that had once ruled the world had shrunk so far you could count Ireland’s working distilleries on one hand. But the styles of that era — the heavier pot stills, the old blends, the last pours of vanished houses — became the seed bank the entire modern revival grew from. To understand where Irish whiskey is going, you taste where it nearly ended.

That’s Thursday night’s seanchas: a guided exploration of Irish whiskey styles from the 1970s, poured at Stranmillis’s favourite neighbourhood whiskey bar. The Jeggy Nettle’s shelves were built for exactly this kind of session — settle in, and send the festival week off properly.
