There are Sunday evenings, and then there are Sunday evenings. On the 23rd of October 2023, Tribal Burger played host to one of the most relaxed, generous, and downright satisfying sessions of Belfast Whiskey Week — a feast of Jameson Irish Whiskey paired with some of the finest handcrafted burgers and wings the city has to offer. Looking Back

Jameson needs little introduction — the world's best-selling Irish whiskey has been the gateway dram for more people than any other bottle in the canon of uisce beatha. But familiarity, as Roisín was quick to point out, can breed a certain comfortable blindness. The whole spirit of the evening — cheekily titled "Meat the Family" — was to challenge that comfortable assumption and show that there is far more depth and range to the Jameson family than the bottle most of us have on the shelf at home. It was a warm, unpretentious invitation to look again, and the crowd took it gladly.

The format was brilliantly judged. Rather than the more formal standing-and-swirling of a traditional tasting room, guests settled in for what felt like a long, generous dinner among friends. Tribal Burger, which holds a well-earned reputation as one of Belfast's most inventive kitchens, rose to the occasion with a bespoke menu that wove Jameson through almost every course. The Jameson mayo on the cheese burger, the pulled pork and BBQ sauce laced with whiskey on the skinny fries, the salted chocolate fudge to finish — none of it felt gimmicky. The food respected the whiskey, and the whiskey respected the food. That balance is harder to achieve than it looks, and credit is due to both teams for getting it right.

Roisín Maguire brought exactly the right energy: knowledgeable without being didactic, passionate without being precious. She walked guests through the range with the easy confidence of someone who genuinely loves what she's pouring — contextualising each expression, drawing out the notes that the food either amplified or reframed, and making space for the kind of table conversation that is really the whole duchas of a night like this. Four drams across the evening meant there was room to breathe, to eat, and to actually absorb what was in the glass rather than rushing on to the next pour.

It was worth noting that this session sat within a wider Jameson footprint at BWW2023 — the brand also brought their energy to their flagship showcase session elsewhere in the festival programme, demonstrating that Jameson's commitment to Belfast Whiskey Week runs deeper than a single evening. And for those who appreciated the food-pairing format specifically, Tribal Burger itself proved its worth as a festival venue again that same week, with Limavady also taking the reins there for their own memorable session. The burger joint on Chichester Street has quietly become one of the festival's most characterful spaces — informal, electric, and entirely Belfast.

By the time the salted chocolate fudge landed and the last of the drams was raised, there was a particular kind of contentment in the room — the sláinte of people who have eaten well, drunk well, and learned something in the process. That is, in the end, what the best Belfast Whiskey Week events always deliver. "Meat the Family" delivered it in spades.
