There's something quietly radical about a whiskey that carries liberation in its very name — and Session 72 of Belfast Whiskey Week 2021 gave attendees across the globe the chance to discover exactly what Liberator Irish Whiskey had to say for itself. On the afternoon of 24th July 2021, glasses were raised in sitting rooms from Strangford to Stockholm, from Sydney to San Francisco, as three generous 50ml samples arrived at collection depots and doorsteps worldwide. It was an introductory session in format, but the spirit of curiosity it stirred was anything but small.

About This Event

This tasting includes 3 x 50ml Samples & Glass and will take place on the 24th @ 15:00.

For those in the USA, Australia, Sweden, Europe, the Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland, you will be able to save on delivery costs by having your package to sent to a localised depot for collection. You will be charged a small fee upon collection, but the cost will be much cheaper than having packs delivered to individual addresses. If you would like to avail of this option, please make a note in the Special Instructions box, and we will contact you at a later date to arrange this and refund your delivery charges.

Looking Back

BWW 2021 was, by necessity, still a festival built for a world learning to gather in new ways — and Session 72 leaned into that spirit with considerable grace. The three-sample format was perfectly pitched for an introductory event: enough to build a picture, to trace a thread, to begin to understand a whiskey's character without overwhelming the palate or the pocket. At £15 a session, it was one of the more accessible entry points the festival offered that year, and it drew in a healthy mix of seasoned uisce beatha devotees and curious newcomers alike.

Liberator is a blended Irish whiskey with ambition quietly stitched into its label. The name itself nods to the great Daniel O'Connell — The Liberator — lending the liquid a sense of history and duchas, of something rooted in the Irish story even as it reaches outward to new audiences. The whiskey tends to wear its approachability lightly: smooth and welcoming on the nose, with a warmth that doesn't demand expertise to appreciate, yet rewards attention from those who bring it. For an introductory session, it was well-matched — a whiskey that meets you where you are.

One of the quiet triumphs of this particular session was the logistics behind it. BWW 2021 had put considerable thought into making global participation genuinely viable, offering localised depot collection points for attendees in the USA, Australia, Sweden, Europe, and across both sides of the Irish border. It meant the sheugh — that ancient, half-joking divide — barely registered as a barrier. The seanchas of the session, the conversation and shared tasting notes, flowed freely across time zones and postcodes alike. Sláinte was typed in chat boxes from a remarkable spread of coordinates.

For those who found themselves wanting to go deeper into the Irish whiskey canon that week, the festival had no shortage of invitations. Session 22's Sexton Deconstruction Showcase offered a more forensic look at another celebrated Irish expression, while Session 1's Bushmills New Cask Finish Range introduction opened a window onto the innovation coming from the north coast's most storied distillery. And for those who truly wanted to plant their feet in the tír of Ulster whiskey heritage, Session 83's Bushmills History MasterClass was the natural next step — a deep dive into centuries of craft on the Causeway Coast.

Looking back, Session 72 served its purpose with quiet distinction. It wasn't a masterclass or a deep deconstruction — it was an open door, warmly lit and welcoming. Liberator made a fine first impression on a global audience, and the session reminded us that the best introductions don't try to tell you everything at once. They simply make you want to come back and learn more.
