World of Whiskey Showcase – Belfast Whiskey Week 2021

There are sessions that deepen your love of a single distillery, and then there are sessions that remind you just how wide and generous the world of uisce beatha truly is. Session 47 of Belfast Whiskey Week 2021 — the World of Whiskey Showcase — was firmly in that second camp. Held on the evening of 25th July 2021, this six-dram journey across the whiskey-making world offered something rare: breadth without shallowness, and discovery without the overwhelm.

Looking Back

Six fifty-millilitre samples. That was the promise of Session 47, and it was a promise well kept. For a festival that has always worn its Belfast duchas proudly — rooted in the tír of Ulster, shaped by the seanchas of Irish distilling — there is something quietly radical about a session that deliberately looks outward. The World of Whiskey format acknowledged what every serious whiskey lover already knows: that understanding Scotch, Japanese, American, and other world expressions only sharpens your appreciation for what is being crafted closer to home.

The logistics of BWW2021 were unlike any previous year, of course. The festival had adapted to a hybrid and postal format, and Session 47 was a fine example of how that model could work in its favour. Attendees across Northern Ireland, the Republic, the USA, Australia, Sweden, and Europe were able to receive their sample packs — and the option of consolidated depot collection meant that the sheugh of international postage costs didn't dampen the experience for those further afield. There was something quietly pleasing about the image of whiskey lovers on several continents raising a dram at 18:00 BST, connected across time zones by six identical bottles and a shared curiosity.

At £60 for six samples, the session sat comfortably in showcase territory — not a fleeting introduction, but not the deep forensic focus of a masterclass either. It was the ideal format for the world-ranging content: enough time and liquid to properly explore each expression, ask questions, and form genuine opinions. BWW2021 had no shortage of Irish-focused depth elsewhere in the programme — those keen to go further with domestic whiskey could explore Session 83's deep dive into Bushmills history, or the forensic pleasures of the Bushmills Causeway Collection MasterClass — but Session 47 offered something different: a reminder that the global conversation around whiskey is one worth joining.

What made the evening land well wasn't just the liquid — it was the framing. A well-curated world whiskey flight lives or dies by its narrative arc, and the session gave attendees the context to taste comparatively rather than in isolation. Styles that might feel abstract in a shop or a book became tangible and discussable when placed side by side. By the time glasses were raised for a final sláinte, the world felt simultaneously larger and more familiar — which is, when you think about it, exactly what a good whiskey session should do.
