Some events at Belfast Whiskey Week ask you to sit back and let the whiskey do the talking. The Whiskey Sensorium — Session 65 in our packed 2024 programme — asked something altogether more demanding: it asked you to pay attention. Hosted by the curious minds behind Spirit Circle, and held across the layered, storied floors of the historic National Bank Building in Belfast city centre, this was less a tasting and more a full-bodied reckoning with your own senses.

About This Event

With our friends at the Spirit Circle, take advantage of this great opportunity to test your senses, challenge your perceptions and immerse yourself into an experience like no other! We want to challenge you, we want you to open up your senses; be one with the whiskey! Well, not as deep as that, but we do want you to become aware of why you drink certain whiskies and order certain drinks. Let's have fun, be childlike again, but drink whiskey at the same time. Be prepared to be taken on a series of sensory experiments with the curious minds of our hosts (from the creators of the Famous Belfast Taste & Tour Company), across multiple levels of the historic National Bank Building, taking part in some thought provoking sessions and sipping bespoke cocktails designed for the Festival.

Looking Back

The question hanging in the air on the 25th of July 2024 wasn't what are you drinking — it was why. That small but seismic shift in framing set the tone for an evening that challenged every assumption attendees carried through the door. The Spirit Circle, born from the same creative energy that drives the well-regarded Belfast Taste & Tour Company, has always been more interested in the drinker than the drink, and that philosophy was writ large across every experiment, exercise and encounter that made up the Sensorium.

Guests were taken on a journey through multiple levels of the National Bank Building — a venue whose Georgian bones and vaulted ceilings lend themselves naturally to the kind of theatrical, immersive experience Spirit Circle does so well. Each floor brought a new sensory challenge: some sessions pressed attendees to identify aromas stripped of context, others asked them to reckon with colour, memory and expectation. It was, in the best possible sense, childlike — the kind of wide-eyed engagement with the world that most of us unlearn somewhere between school and adulthood. The whiskey was always present, but it was never the whole story.

Bespoke cocktails, designed specifically for Belfast Whiskey Week 2024, punctuated the evening and gave the sensory experiments a delicious anchor. These weren't decorative flourishes — each drink was calibrated to illustrate a point, to underline a sensation, or to gently upend what attendees thought they already knew. It was immersive hospitality with genuine intellectual backbone, and the room felt it. The conversations that broke out between sessions had that particular energy you only get when a crowd is genuinely surprised by themselves.

For those who came to BWW 2024 wanting to deepen their relationship with uisce beatha beyond the glass, this session was a natural companion to some of the more traditional masterclass offerings on the programme. The structured, producer-led depth of events like the Bushmills History MasterClass or the considered exploration of the Bushmills Causeway Collection sit at one end of a spectrum — the Whiskey Sensorium sat proudly at the other, asking not where whiskey comes from, but where you come from when you reach for it.

At £35, this was one of the more accessible sessions in the 2024 festival, and it delivered well above its price point. Spirit Circle brings a rare combination of warmth, mischief and genuine expertise to everything they do, and the Sensorium was a high watermark for experiential whiskey events in Belfast. If this kind of playful, provocative engagement with the dúchas of drinking is something that speaks to you, keep an eye on our Whiskey Map for where the Spirit Circle and events of this kind are rooted across the city.
