Irish Whiskey & Fortified Wines | Belfast Whiskey Week 2024
On a July evening in the heart of Belfast city centre, Whiskey Club NI brought something a little different to Belfast Whiskey Week 2024 — a thoughtful pairing of Irish whiskeys and fortified wines that invited guests to slow down, sip carefully, and discover how beautifully the uisce beatha can converse with the grape. Hosted at Neighbourhood Café, this TakeOver session drew together whiskey lovers and wine enthusiasts in equal measure, united by curiosity and good company.
About This Event
Whiskey Club NI presents an evening of Wines and Whiskies. Our first TakeOver event this year with Neighbourhood Cafe finds us sharing some light bites with wines and whiskies paired from the thoroughbred stable of Irish Distillers. Famous names in Irish Whiskey with their complementary wine to explore and savour.Looking Back
There is a particular pleasure in being handed a glass and told: now, try this alongside. It is the pleasure of context, of contrast, of a flavour suddenly revealing a hidden facet of itself when set beside its complement. That was the animating idea behind Whiskey Club NI's evening of Irish whiskeys and fortified wines — and it was, by all accounts, an idea whose time had well and truly come. The event formed part of the club's annual TakeOver series at Neighbourhood Café, where the intimate, unhurried atmosphere of the venue lent itself perfectly to an evening of considered tasting rather than rushed rounds.
The whiskies on show came from the thoroughbred stable of Irish Distillers — the Cork-based powerhouse whose portfolio represents some of the most recognised names in Irish whiskey. Jameson, Powers, Redbreast, Green Spot, Yellow Spot, Midleton: names that carry real weight and real heritage, names that are part of the duchas of Irish distilling. Each expression brought its own character to the table, and the evening's format — light bites alongside paired pours — gave guests the space to explore those characters without rushing. A fortified wine alongside a sherried single pot still, say, or a tawny alongside a grain-forward blend; the combinations were carefully considered and rewarding to unpack.
Whiskey Club NI has built a strong reputation for exactly this kind of thoughtful, educational approach to whiskey appreciation, and this session was a fine example of their craft. The format encouraged conversation — between the pours themselves, certainly, but also between the guests, who ranged from seasoned collectors to curious first-timers. That breadth of experience in the room is part of what makes these evenings special: the seanchas flows as freely as the whiskey, and everyone leaves knowing a little more than when they arrived. If you have found yourself drawn to the Irish Distillers portfolio through events like the Sexton Deconstruction Showcase or the Bushmills New Cask Finish Range Introduction, this session would have felt like a natural and rewarding next step.
Neighbourhood Café itself proved an inspired choice of venue. Cosy and welcoming without feeling cramped, it offered the kind of unhurried warmth that suits an evening centred on exploration rather than spectacle. The light bites — small plates designed to complement rather than overwhelm — did their job quietly and well, grounding the palate between pours and giving the room a convivial, almost domestic ease. It was tír made table: a sense that this corner of Belfast city centre had, for one evening, become a place of genuine shared pleasure.
At £55 a head, this was a session that offered genuine value — not simply in the liquid poured, but in the knowledge shared and the connections made around the table. For those who want to trace the wider arc of Belfast Whiskey Week's relationship with the Irish Distillers family, the Bushmills History MasterClass and the Belfast Whiskey Map offer excellent starting points. Sláinte mhaith to Whiskey Club NI and to everyone who pulled up a chair.
